{"id":2827,"date":"2019-05-12T14:02:25","date_gmt":"2019-05-12T13:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/?p=2827"},"modified":"2024-02-02T17:29:36","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T17:29:36","slug":"glossary-raqs-sharqi-movements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/glossary-raqs-sharqi-movements\/","title":{"rendered":"Glossary of Raqs Sharqi Belly Dance Movements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements.jpg\"><img data-src=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements.jpg 810w, https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements-480x267.jpg 480w\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"450\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"Raqs sharqi movements\" class=\"wp-image-15248 lazyload\" style=\"width:608px;height:338px\"  sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 810px, 100vw\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements.jpg\" alt=\"Raqs sharqi movements\" class=\"wp-image-15248\" style=\"width:608px;height:338px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements.jpg 810w, https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/belly-dance-movements-480x267.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 810px, 100vw\"><\/noscript><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following list of terms for Raqs sharqi movements is not the official codified terminology, as this does not exist for Raqs sharqi or belly dance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is instead the terminology I have learnt from my teachers over the years and from books and DVDs which I have used for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, other Raqs sharqi practitioners may use slightly different terms for some movements, but the most common movements are usually recognised by the community, using these terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arabesque<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arabesque is a travelling step with a pivot on one foot and an extended leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backbend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Backbend refers to leaning backwards with the upper body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Barrel turn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is similar to the corkscrew turn, but with the arms extended (one upwards and the other one downwards).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belly flutters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belly flutters are quick contractions and releases of the upper abdominal muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belly pop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belly pop in Raqs sharqi means a quick contraction and release of the lower abdominal muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Camel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A camel is an isolated torso undulation like a wave, forward and back. In the Egyptian style, it is confined mostly to the lower abdomen and lower back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chest circle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A chest circle is  a circular movement of the ribcage, on the horizontal plane (but it can sometimes be on the vertical plane)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chest drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A chest drop is an isolated movement of the ribcage downwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chest lift<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an isolated movement of the ribcage upwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choo choo shimmies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <br>Choo choo shimmies are hip shimmies performed on relev\u00e9, while shuffling along the dance floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Corkscrew turn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A corkscrew turn is a turn performed on the spot, by crossing one foot in front of the other and pivoting on the heel of the foot that is in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Egyptian walk, or Hagalla<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are when you step down on one foot at a time, whilst lowering the corresponding hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Floorwork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Floorwork refers to dancing movements done while sitting or lying on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grapevine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grapevine is the sideways travelling movement with sidesteps and steps across the support foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Head slide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A head slide is the horizontal sliding movement of the head side to side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heels stomp<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A heels stomp is the tapping both heels flat to stress a downward accent in the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip bump<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the thrusting movement of the hip to the side with emphasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip circle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hip circle is the circular movement of the hips, on a horizontal plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a aria-label=\"hip drop (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M71uPS6CfdQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hip drop<\/a> is the movement of one hip up to down, with emphasis on the downward motion. Only one hip moves and no weight is placed on the corresponding hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weight of the body rests solely on the leg corresponding to the static hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip horizontal figure of eight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hip figure of eight horizontally, is the tracing a figure of eight, or infinity symbol pattern, with the hips on a horizontal plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip jewel <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hip jewel is half horizontal figures of eight of one hip, punctuated at the end by a small abdominal contraction, with a ripple effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip lift<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This involves the movement of one hip at a time down to up, with emphasis on the upward motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip shimmies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the same as hip vibrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip slide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hip slide is the horizontal sliding movement of the hips from side to side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip tak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hip tak is a small and sharp hip movement that creates an accent, similar to a hip bump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip twist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This involves moving one hip forward and the other back, on a horizontal plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hip vertical figure of 8<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the tracing a figure of eight, or infinity symbol pattern, with the hips on a vertical plane, going inwards, towards the centre of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Layering in Raqs sharqi is the performing two movements of the same part of the body at the same time. For example, a hip figure of eight while shimming the hips; little hip drops while doing a horizontal hip figure of eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maya<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya is like a hip vertical figure of eight, but with the hips moving outwards, away from the centre of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pelvic lift and drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pelvic lift and drop is an isolated movement of the pelvis upwards and downward, with the accent on the down movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pelvic tilt with weight transfer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This involves tilting the pelvis, with weight transfer between one leg positioned in front and the other leg that is slightly back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relev\u00e9 (or demi-pointe)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a movement in which the dancer rises on the tips of the toes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U-nhYGYWO2Q?feature=oembed\" title=\"Follow-Along for Strong Feet, Stability, a High Demi Pointe for Dancers\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\"   allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scissor step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A scissor step is stepping with the same foot forward and back, while the other footsteps on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shoulder rolls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoulder rolls are alternating rolling movements of the shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shoulder shimmies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoulder shimmies are the vibration of the shoulders, achieved by moving them in quick alternation back and forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gQwNdOvoCUw?feature=oembed\" title=\"HOW TO SHOULDER SHIMMY | UPPER BODY SHIMMY | BELLY DANCE SHOULDER SHIMMY | HOW TO BELLY DANCE\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\"   allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snake arms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These involve moving the arm joints in smooth succession from the shoulder to the elbow and wrist, with a wave or snake-like effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soheir Zaki hip-drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the movement of one hip at a time up to down, with emphasis on the downward motion.
