She is an actress, singer, and dancer (El Safy, 1993a) and danced at the Parisiana, a club in Cairo owned by her husband (Taylor, no date; Rose, 2006; TheCaroVan, 2015c).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dancer Yosifah (Rose, 2006, para. 3) loves Lucy because to her, \u2018she represents the last actively performing <em>fannana<\/em> (artist) of Classical Raqs Sharqi of our time\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have not been able to find any movie scenes in which she danced, but she acted in movies and won \u2018an award at the Alexandria Film Festival in 1996\u2019 (TheCaroVan, 2015c).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have found some scenes of her dancing at the Parisiana available online, taken from old videotapes (hence the images are not very clear).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After she retired from her club work, she performed at festivals, such as The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/pyramisa-suites-hotel-cairo\/nile-group-oriental-dance-festival-june-2018\/163874317557990\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Nile Festival in Cairo (opens in a new tab)\">Nile Festival in Cairo<\/a> (Enan Egyptian Troupe, 2007), and taught workshops internationally (Rose, 2006).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img data-src=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lucy-classical-raqs.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lucy-classical-raqs.jpg 394w, https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lucy-classical-raqs-300x254.jpg 300w\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"394\" height=\"334\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"Lucy the last classical Raqs sharqi dancer\" class=\"wp-image-2560 lazyload\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"394\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lucy-classical-raqs.jpg\" alt=\"Lucy the last classical Raqs sharqi dancer\" class=\"wp-image-2560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lucy-classical-raqs.jpg 394w, https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lucy-classical-raqs-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\"><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Figure 27<\/strong> &#8211; Lucy (El Safy 1993) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cairo_Unveiled_and_Lucy\"><\/span>Cairo Unveiled and Lucy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucy was interviewed as part of a National Geographic documentary, Cairo Unveiled, in 1993 directed by Kirk Simon and Karen Goodman (Simon and Goodman, no date).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V950x1OhpoI?feature=oembed\" title=\"Cairo Unveiled   Lucy part 1\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\"   allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this documentary, we know something about Lucy\u2019s origins and her view of the dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucy grew up near Mohammed Ali Street, in Cairo, famous for being the place where many entertainers used to live (Van Nieuwkerk, 1995, p. 50).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucy says about Mohammed Ali Street (Simon and Goodman, 1992): \u2018Even though I moved away years ago, Mohammed Ali street will always be home for me . . . I am from here . . . She is very soft and elegant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her image is not bint al Balad, but she reminds me more of Samia Gamal. Indeed, El Safy (1993b, para. 4) defines her style\u2019 delicate, refined and intricate\u2019.Yosifah comments (Rose, 2006, para. 10):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucy always holds herself in a very balanced, elevated, and graceful and centered posture. This gives elegance to her movements . . . Lucy seems to float . . . Lucy uses her shoulders, arms, and hands in fluid and graceful movements. . . . Lucy believes that, after Samia Gamal, she is the second Egyptian Raqs Sharqi dancer to excel in the most graceful arm and upper body movements.<\/p>\n<cite>Rose (2006)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Musical_Feeling_and_Improvising\"><\/span>Musical Feeling and Improvising<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another characteristic of Lucy is her deep feeling for the music and the fact that she always improvises during her performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She \u2018does not believe that one can properly perform Oriental dance with a set choreography\u2019 (Rose, 2006, para. 10).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improvising (except for group dances) was and is something that most Egyptian Raqs sharqi dancers do and so is paying attention to the emotional connection with the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On YouTube, under a video in which Lucy performs to Lessa Fakir, one of Oum Kalthoum songs (NormaDancer2, 2009), I have found some comments which are very telling about Middle Eastern attitude towards music, dance, lyrics, and emotions. In particular, Omid Aghajari writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can honestly say no one dance has ever touched me so much. . . . Look at the extremely delicate and subtle movements she does to embody the music and the spirit of the song . . . I am honestly crying seeing this.<\/p>\n<cite>Omid Aghajari<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yosifah comments,\nabout a workshop in Dallas with Lucy that (Rose, 2006, para. 10):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The single most striking element of Lucy&#8217;s virtuosity is that it embodies the music to which she performs: she becomes the music and conveys it with her emotions, her movements, and creates her dance with genuine warmth, love, and joy for her audience. . . . Thus, Lucy instructed workshop attendants repeatedly, &#8220;Listen to the music! Feel the music; dance to the music!&#8221; <\/p>\n<cite>Rose (2006)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Videos_Used_in_the_Analysis\"><\/span>Videos Used in the Analysis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The videos I used in the analysis are both from live performances, with big bands. The quality of the videos is not great, but it is enough to be able to see the main characteristics of Lucy\u2019s style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first video, she is dancing to the Umm Kalsoum\u2019s song <em>Lessr Fakir<\/em> (<em>Do you still remember<\/em>?) (TheCaroVan, 2015b).
