McDonald<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-ba1d42eb-df4c-43e5-abc1-c50fbcb6c69b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Introduction\"><\/span><br>Introduction<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-ba1d42eb-df4c-43e5-abc1-c50fbcb6c69b\">This is a new academic book about belly dance, which I found thought-provoking and very useful for my own PhD about Raqs sharqi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-ba1d42eb-df4c-43e5-abc1-c50fbcb6c69b\">I recommend it not only for people who have an academic interest in the subject but also for anyone who is passionate about this dance genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-ba1d42eb-df4c-43e5-abc1-c50fbcb6c69b\">Belly dancing has only recently started attracting interest on the part of researchers and it is great to see an in-depth interest in this art form from the sociological and cultural point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-ba1d42eb-df4c-43e5-abc1-c50fbcb6c69b\">I also love the fact that Caitlin gives the proceeds of the book to the charity <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenforwomen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Women for Women<\/a>, which helps women in war-torn countries to rebuild their lives (and fantastic charity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_the_Books_Author_and_Editor\"><\/span>About the Book&#8217;s Author and Editor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book is a collection of essays written by scholars who are belly dance practitioners, as well as being involved in academia, and who has done research in the areas of performing arts and\/or Middle Eastern studies and is written by <a href=\"https:\/\/leadingedgeforum.com\/researcher\/caitlin-mcdonald\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caitlin McDonald<\/a> and edited by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbara_Sellers-Young\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barbara Sellers-Young<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Caitlin McDonald<\/strong> has been involved in belly dancing for many years and holds a PhD on that subject from the University of Exeter, in the UK. Her PhD thesis has been published in a book with the title: Global Moves: Belly Dance as an Extra\/Ordinary Space to Explore Social Paradigms in Egypt and Around the World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although her starting point for this thesis was <a href=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/belly-dancers-egyptian-media\/\">Egypt<\/a>, as a country that is often romanticized by Raqs Sharqi enthusiasts around the world, it then focuses on how this dance form has spread throughout the world and generated a world belly dance community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Barbara Sellers-Young<\/strong> is a professor in the Department of Dance at York University, Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has written extensively, academic papers and books, about dance, theatre, and movement, as well as belly dancing. A book she has written on this dance form is Belly Dance Pilgrimage and Identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">&gt;&gt; <strong>Books by Caitlin<\/strong> &gt;&gt; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3M95Uvb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Caitlin on Amazon<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Belly_Dance_Around_the_World_Review\"><\/span>Belly Dance Around the World Review<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belly Dance Around the World focuses on a dance form that originated as a solo improvisational form in Northern Africa and the Middle East, which has spread in the last two centuries all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its transmission across locations and cultures, belly dance has adapted to local understandings and needs, developing in many different forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hence, in its journey as far afield as America, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia, it has developed new forms and styles, while retaining some common features in terms of the basic dance vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This book shows how, in spite of all the changes that belly dance has gone through, it still remains a very communicative art form and a dance genre mainly focused on community and on building cohesion between individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-256ecc13-828e-4c00-bb6a-621fe47c2e56\">Through the essays in this book, the reader will be able to see how different elements can influence changes in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/transmission\/\">dance genre, as it is transmitted across time and space<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-256ecc13-828e-4c00-bb6a-621fe47c2e56\">The book highlights elements such as the sense of community (both local and global); the way in which the internet has been used as a tool to connect belly dancers with each other; the role of travel and <a href=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/transculturality\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">diasporas<\/span><\/a> and how different cultures can influence the same dance form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-256ecc13-828e-4c00-bb6a-621fe47c2e56\">This gives a picture of dynamic cultural expression and it is a useful insight into how human traditions, in general, can develop and transform in a globally connected world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-256ecc13-828e-4c00-bb6a-621fe47c2e56\">This book includes twelve essays, in addition to the introduction by Barbara Sellers-Young, written by various authors. Topics include different styles of belly dance in various countries and seen from different perspectives. By Noha Roushdy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-227f92a7-459c-4ec3-98ab-9ac5c48db99a\">This chapter is about <a href=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/birth-raqs-sharqi\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what baladi means<\/span><\/a> for young Egyptians today; about the perception of baladi dance in Egypt and how young Egyptians are rediscovering baladi, as part of their cultural identity, through its commercialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-2d1dff85-f35c-4fb2-8116-331e8463a6f8\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_%E2%80%9Cthe_Feeling%E2%80%9D_Oriental_Dance_Musiqa_al-Gadid_and_Tarab_By_Candace_Bordelon\"><\/span>Finding \u201cthe Feeling\u201d Oriental Dance, Musiqa al-Gadid, and Tarab. By Candace Bordelon<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-d0aee427-97e8-4a01-a02a-6bb8430d91a7\">This essay highlights the role of tarab (ecstasy) in Egyptian belly dance performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-d0aee427-97e8-4a01-a02a-6bb8430d91a7\">The dancer is seen as the means through which emotions are embodied and transmitted in an almost physical way to the audience, who identify with the dancer on both emotional and cultural levels (as the music, and what it connects with, are part of the audience\u2019s cultural heritage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-be017b67-434c-4df0-9220-570a20aec360\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Performing_Identity_Diasporic_Encounters_%E2%80%93_By_Lynette_Harper\"><\/span>Performing Identity \/ Diasporic Encounters &#8211; By Lynette Harper<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-4270281e-413c-44b4-a99e-3426db43179a\">This is about Middle Eastern diasporas in Canada and how practicing belly dance is connected with the sense of identity of women who live in Canada but were either born in the Middle East or Northern Africa or are of Middle Eastern\/Northern African descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-4270281e-413c-44b4-a99e-3426db43179a\">A group of women are interviewed and their points of view analyzed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-5c685891-b657-467c-b3fe-d9e657b57a03\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1970s_Belly_Dance_and_the_%E2%80%9CHow-To%E2%80%9D_Phenomenon_Feminism_Fitness_and_Orientalism_By_Virginia_Keft-Kennedy\"><\/span>1970s Belly Dance and the \u201cHow-To\u201d Phenomenon. Feminism, Fitness, and Orientalism By Virginia Keft-Kennedy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-9978e83e-4012-477b-9bfe-ffd0d155b54c\">In this essay, the author analyses \u201chow-to\u201d books from the 1970s, about belly dance. In the 1970s, belly dance was rediscovered in America for its fitness value and also as a form of activity that was in line with feminist ideals, as it was seen as liberating and helping women to appreciate their bodies whatever their shape or size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-9978e83e-4012-477b-9bfe-ffd0d155b54c\">However, the author shows how these books imply some contradictions in the way femininity and this dance form are presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-df597f86-b68d-4cbe-8243-4dd67c441e98\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dancing_with_Inspiration_in_New_Zealand_and_Australian_Dance_Communities_By_Marion_Cowper_and_Carolyn_Michelle\"><\/span>Dancing with Inspiration in New Zealand and Australian Dance Communities By Marion Cowper and Carolyn Michelle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-a2da83dc-c1fa-4311-b9a7-a96a1bfeb39d\">The authors in this essay highlight how women who practice belly dance in Australia and New Zealand appreciate this dance form for its healing effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-a2da83dc-c1fa-4311-b9a7-a96a1bfeb39d\">One of this article\u2019s aims is to show how, being transmitted across cultures, dance is not only influenced by the cultures to which practitioners belong, but also by their individual and personal histories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-0cfb48c5-361a-46dd-a630-f655ab2d53cf\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Local_Performance_Global_Connection_American_Tribal_Style_and_Its_Imagined_Community_By_Teresa_Cutler-Broyles\"><\/span>Local Performance \/ Global Connection. By Teresa Cutler-Broyles<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-60cdc25c-b97f-41de-98e6-094a293d1e8d\">This essay focuses on the American Tribal Style and how its practitioners all over the world feel a sense of connection to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-60cdc25c-b97f-41de-98e6-094a293d1e8d\">They form a global ATS community, facilitated by the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-77dc6b6f-a71f-45c5-bebd-ffc692b77fa4\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Use_of_Nostalgia_in_Tribal_Fusion_Dance_by_Catherine_Mary_Scheelar\"><\/span>The Use of Nostalgia in Tribal Fusion Dance by Catherine Mary Scheelar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-71d06554-4ef9-4b25-9ab4-72f4b73152df\">Tribal fusion belly dance is seen under the light of a feeling of nostalgia towards early 20th century <a href=\"https:\/\/worlddanceheritage.org\/birth-raqs-sharqi\/\">vaudeville<\/a>-style in America and Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-71d06554-4ef9-4b25-9ab4-72f4b73152df\">This is seen as a way of connecting belly dance with its Western influence, so Western dancers can also connect with it through their own heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-71d06554-4ef9-4b25-9ab4-72f4b73152df\">TF still remains relevant and connected to other forms of belly dance, while expressing a different identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-e9bbe991-a68a-493f-94cd-c0d9f91d131f\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CI_mean_what_is_a_Pakeha_New_Zealanders_national_dance_We_Dont_have_one%E2%80%9D_by_Brigid_Kelly\"><\/span>\u201cI mean, what is a Pakeha New Zealander\u2019s national dance?
